Hi, I’m one of the senior designers on the game. EA generally prefers this kind of thing to come from PR instead of devs, but I’m passionate about this project so here we are. This is the first mobile game I’ve made, all my previous projects were competitive multiplayer games on PC. I saw this post since I happen to be subbed to the Starcraft reddit since I have about 2000 hours of It and it’s one of my favorite games of all time.
I wanted to introduce myself to provide some additional information which may be helpful to this thread. One is that it’s a huge goal of mine and the products to provide a deep competitve experience, and obviously that won’t happen if unit leveling can compromise the competitive integrity of the match.
We have several systems in flight to help address this that I'd love feedback on, one is we’re planning on capping unit levels per ranked division, so people can’t out level you to the degree it would stop the better player from winning. Another is for people with more powerful units who are still inside the level cap, even that marginal difference can be frustrating even if it doesn’t stop the better player from winning. For these rare matches the game would detect them as challenge matches, and you’ll lose no elo for losing and gain extra for winning.
There’s a bunch big other systems were working on towards this end too. But the tldr is that we aren’t just reskinning some traditional mobile game with an RTS IP, were trying to make something truly new and original that delivers on the depth and excitement of an RTS match, but optimized for mobile.
